There is no easy answer to this question as controversy surrounding IMPACT’s most coveted prize, the World Championship, is at its peak. Some people will agree that Alberto El Patron has every right to hold the World Championship, whereas others believe that it’s only fair for him to relinquish the Title to Lashley. Looking back at what happened during the match last Thursday night, it is easy for one to take the side of their desired perspective, no matter which side that is. When it comes down to it, though, we can all agree that both athletes displayed a couple of questionable actions throughout the course of the match. Lashley knew what he was doing when he intentionally pulled the referee in the way of Patron’s kick. With that being said, Patron used outside resources when trying to get the win. While Lashley was trying to get back to his feet after a kick, Patron took advantage and hit Lashley with the Title, scoring the win. Was he wrong to do so? Let’s not forget, it was Lashley who brought the World Championship into the ring in the first place, so was he the one in the wrong?
Going back to the conclusion of this match, the world was left in confusion when Patron walked away with the Championship. The mannerisms and expressions on the faces of Lashley, referees, and other advisors said it all. When the show went off the air, contention continued backstage.
But on Monday morning, everything changed for El Patron as he hesitantly handed over the World Title to IMPACT advisors. Bruce Prichard made the comment to Patron, “It’s the right thing to do.”
As we continue to follow the story of El Patron and Lashley, it’s hard not to remotely empathize with El Patron and his actions. Knowing that many only get one shot at the World Championship because of it’s prominence, El Patron capitalized on this opportunity. After all, if you listen to the commentary between Josh Mathews and Jeremy Borash during the ending controversy of the match, the two debated Lashley’s intentions for bringing the World Title to the ring. Again, if Lashley were to never bring the Title to the ring, would all of this have happened? Would Patron still be our Champion? Or would he have never been our Champion in the first place?
The narrative between these two continues to grow rapidly. Tonight on IMPACT on POP, El Patron will be in the IMPACT Zone addressing the situation. Tune in to POP at 8/7c for more information on this issue.
