It debuted in June of 2002 and ever since, the X Division Championship has been a coveted prize among some of the highest flying, most remarkably agile athletes in all of professional wrestling history. The list of accomplished wrestlers who have held the title is endless. From inaugural champion, AJ Styles to the longest reigning X Division Champion, Austin Aries, to our current, reigning champion, Trevor Lee, each man has left a piece of himself and his career in the ring in an effort to not let that championship slip through their grasp. Braving obstacles such as Ultimate X where the only way to win is to capture the title suspended high above the ring, to multiple man matches, a staple in the X Division, where the champion must not only win, they must also not lose or their title reign is over. Every element that goes into championing the X Division is intense, exciting and fast paced for the fans and grueling, challenging and risky for the men involved.
For much of 2016 and all but a few short days of 2017, Trevor Lee has been the man at the top of the X Division in his second reign as champion. With a move set that includes a Small Package Driver, a Matrix-like maneuver he calls “Collision Course” and countless other powerful and high flying offensive moves, the Carolina Caveman has more than proven that he deserves to carry the gold around his waist. This Thursday night on a live episode of IMPACT, however, Lee may be in for the fight of his career as he puts his title on the line against a number of men, two of which we know for sure will push Trevor Lee to his limits. Andrew Everett, the former third member of the Helms Dynasty who had a brother-like bond with Lee was betrayed and embarrassed by Trevor and Gregory Shane Helms when he was kicked out of the Helms Dynasty. More than having his eye on the championship, Andrew has a personal score to settle with his former brother and live television with the title on the line may be the perfect place to accomplish both of his goals.
Also involved in Thursday night’s X Division Championship match is former champion, Suicide. A man who has been a “here today, gone tomorrow” member of the X Division roster since 2008, Suicide’s unorthodox in-ring style and all around enigmatic persona makes him a difficult challenge for his competitors.
We know that three of the most skilled X Division competitors in IMPACT Wrestling will be in action Thursday night, but with the ever changing roster and the change to the company that new management has promised, anything is possible. Is the deck stacked too high against the champion this week? Will Trevor Lee’s second reign as X Division champion come to an end this week? Those questions remain to be answered but one thing is certain; the X Division is on fire and the stage is set for an explosive championship match this Thursday night, live on IMPACT!
